A mountain bike is a bicycle created for hard terrain cycling. As a sport, mountain biking has been around for around 30 years. In the beginning, there were very few options to choose from for avid cycling enthusiasts. But today, we have got a variety of bikes to choose from based on the rider and the type of riding.

· Cross country

This is the most conventional and popular of all the mountain bikes. They can be rigid (with no suspension), hard tail (with only front suspension), or full suspension. This is the bike for you if you're an average weekend mountain biker and ride on paved trails and occasional hills and mountains.

· Downhill bikes
Downhill bikes are built to be very durable so that they can withstand hard hits and big drops while racing down the mountain.

· Trail bikes
These bikes are specially designed for jumping over obstacles.

· Jump and Slalom bikes

Jump and slalom bikes are used in competitive jumping, street racing and slalom down mountains. In competitive jumping, the rider performs certain tricks while in mid air.

If we move on to the argument of which is the best mountain bike in the world, it all depends on the riding style. Although there are many specialist bikes, each of them maybe suited to a certain style of riding and may not seem to be the best in a different riding style. For example, the lightest bike may also seem to be the fastest but it will be very liable to breaking into pieces even before you've had some fun. Similarly, the fastest downhill bike will go uphill only if you take a lift!

If you're Lance Armstrong and you're looking for a bike that will win you competitions, this article is not for you. So basically we want the best bike that can do everything. A bike that's strong enough that it won't break as soon as you hit a tree, light enough that you can pedal uphill without getting knocked out, and as fast as possible so that you can beat all your friends.

A full suspension is surely the way to go, it will make climbing and descent, both more enjoyable. So there are two possible options for the best bike, the tough hard tail and the light cross country suspension, and it would be best if they are made of aluminum.

Well, by now you must be thinking that none of the kinds of bikes I am talking about would be best at anything. Yes, that's true, but specialist bikes are usually an average rider's horror, they may be terrible at a lot of things, but yes, the best at one particular thing. So I'm suggesting a bike that can take you both uphill and downhill and which you can ride anywhere unlike most of the specialist bikes.

So this is the moment you've been waiting for: who makes the best mountain bikes? Specialized, Scott and Schwin are the three most popular brands. Specialized is the market leader, producing good quality bikes for people with different requirements. It caters to the needs of an amateur and a champion cyclist with its wide variety of brands. Your Next Mountain Bike Crankset

The crankset on a mountain bike is a valuable part when choosing what bike to buy or just upgrading your current cranks. Most all off road bikes come with either two or three chain rings as part of the cranks. You will find that most all of these bikes on the market come with three chain rings as part of the cranks.

Cranks that come with three chain rings most likely come as 22, 32 and 44 teeth with the ring with the least amount of teeth closest to the bike frame and the ring with the most amount of teeth near the crank arm. On the other hand, someone who rides a mountain with the intent of racing and therefore owns a cross country bike, will most likely buy a double crankset rather than a triple. With a double crankset there is a lot less shifting and therefore you can put more focus on the race. You can either buy this type of crankset as a 42/30 or as a 40/28.

For someone who is looking to race off road and is tooling to save as much weight as they can while still being able to have enough gear ratio's, then a double chain ring is a great way to go.

A lot of guys that I ride with from time to time have a triple on their bikes and therefore have plenty of gear ratio's to choose from.

I competed in a race this past summer and my bike came standard with a triple and with parts of the course that I had to use my small ring and then shift to my big ring each time on the flat areas made for a lot more shifting than I wanted to. But for someone who needs a lot of different gear ratios for different types of terrain, then a triple crankset would definitely be the way to go!

No matter what kind of crankset you have on your bike, be sure that when you're chain is not in too much of a diagonal meaning that if you are in your big chain ring, you shouldn't be in your biggest couple of cogs. Also, when in your small chain ring, you shouldn't be in your smallest couple of cogs.

About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

How to Properly Clean Your Mountain Bike Drivetrain

A clean, properly lubed drivetrain will look better, shift better and extend the life of your bike's most important parts. Ideally you'll want to perform a cleaning after every muddy or dusty ride. Dirt, sand and other gritty contaminants act like sandpaper on your drivetrain, slowing wearing down parts with every turn of the crank.

It's much easier to clean your bike's drivetrain if you have access to mechanics stand. A stand will firmly hold you bike in place and puts it at a more manageable height. Working on a bike while it's balanced up against a wall often results in the bike crashing to the ground or in a wrestling match between you and the bike. Invest in a good stand and bike maintenance will be a much more enjoyable experience.

A mistake many novices make is to use a high pressure hose when cleaning a mountain bike. Although this does a good job at washing off dirt and debris, it also does a good job of washing away grease and lubrication that's critical for optimal performance. You'll want to instead start with a bucket of hot water and your choice of dish detergent or biodegradable bike-specific cleaner like Pedro's Bio Cleaner. You'll also want to have a set of soft bristled brushes and maybe a tool, like Park Tools Gear Clean Brush, to get in between the cogs on your cassette. Use the brushes to gently clean the drivetrain, making sure to get all the hard-to-reach places. Once you're done, you can use a hose (without high-pressure nozzle) to rinse the parts clean.

Next you'll want to wipe down the parts with a rag in order to get any gunk left over and remove excess water. Wait until the drivetrain is thoroughly dry and then apply your favorite wet or dry lube. A wet lube like Pedro's Synlube is usually best for rainy or muddy conditions and a dry lube like Pedro's Ice Wax is better for dry, dusty conditions. Be especially careful when using a wet lube to only apply a small amount. Using too much wet lube can attract more dirt and grime and wear out parts even faster.

If you take the time to follow these steps after each or every other ride (certainly after muddy rides), you'll have more efficient, smoother running drivetrain and spend less time in the shop replacing a worn out cassette or chain.

Mountain bike gears are continually becoming more and more complicated and intricate. Today’s bikes can come with up to 27 gear ratios. It is common for a mountain bike today to use nine gears in the back and three sprockets of different sizes in the front for gear ration production.

Why so many gears? The most common reason is that a large number of gears allow a rider to pedal at the same pace no matter what terrain that he/she is on. This can be understood better if you think about a bike that just has one gear. Every time you turn the pedals one full turn, then the rear wheel also turns one full turn, too (1:1 gear ratio).

For example, your back wheel is measured at 26 inches. If you pedal one full turn, then this would mean that your wheel moved 81.6 inches. If you are riding at 50 RPM, then you will be able to go 340 feet per minute. This means that you were going 3.8MPH, which is equivalent to walking speed. This speed is great for going up a hill that is steep, but it is not a good speed for flat ground or racing downhill.

If you want your bike to go quicker, then you will need a different ratio. If you want to reach a speed of 25 MPH downhill using a 50-RPM cadence, then you will need to have a 5.6:1 gear ration. If you have lots of gears on your bike, then you will be able to get that ratio so that you can continue your pedaling at a consistent pace, no matter what terrain you are on or what your speed is.

A typical mountain bike that has 27 gears will have six gears so incrementally close to the other that you will not be able to determine that there is any difference between the gears when you change them.

Most mountain bike riders decide to choose a gear system with a front socket that is suitable for the slope or terrain that they usually ride on and they stay with this choice, even though it may be more difficult under a heavy load to shift the gears. This is purely a personal decision, but it is simpler to shift between gears when the rear socket, rather than the front one.

Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.
